Rhinoplasty "Nose Surgery"

Nasal appearance is one of the most common concerns that patients have.    Most who present for rhinoplasty consultation are concerned with their nasal appearance due to the way it developed in their youth, while others have had trauma to the nose, or are unhappy with the appearance after previous attempt at rhinoplasty.  Many have associated breathing problems which can also be developmental in origin or from trauma.  The appearance of the nose has a great impact on self-esteem and confidence, while nasal function is extremely important.

Atlanta Facial Plastic Surgeon Dr. John Frodel can answer specific questions about your specific needs with respect to your nasal appearance and function.  He lectures regularly on rhinoplasty topics and specializes in not only primary rhinoplasty, but also has expertise and vast experience in revision rhinoplasty.

When considering whether you are a candidate for rhinoplasty, it is important to communicate exactly what your goals are.  When you visit with Dr. Frodel, he will clearly review his interpretation of your concerns and, in combination with his examination of your nose and how it is in balance with your face, will offer solutions and goals.  If these match with your goals, and they usuallly do, then you will be a good candidate for rhinoplasty surgery.

Making the Decision for Rhinoplasty
Whether the surgery is desired for functional or cosmetic reasons, your choice of a qualified facial plastic surgeon is of paramount importance. As with many facial plastic surgeons, Dr. Frodel is trained in ear, nose, throat, as well as facial cosmetic surgery, which provide you, the patient, with the highest level of training and expertise. Dr. Frodel will examine the structure of your nose, both externally and internally, to evaluate what you can expect from rhinoplasty. You are most likely to be pleased with the results of your surgery if you have a realistic idea of what nasal surgery can and cannot do.

The Surgery
Usually done under general anesthesia (in some more limited cases, it can be done under sedation anesthesia), incisions are made inside the nose and, sometimes on the skin between your nostrils.  The skin is lifted off of the cartilages and bone, then appropriate re-shaping of these structures is performed.   When there are breathing problems, these issues are addressed through the same incisions and approaches.  On occasion, cartilage is borrowed from the nasal septum, ear, or rib to assist in optimizing the final outcome.

Expectations After Surgery
Like all surgeries, there is swelling that can take some time to resolve.  This is particulary an issue with rhinoplasty, as the nose is a delicate structure and even the smallest amount of swelling can distort the appearance and function.  While early results are generally gratifying, it will take months for resolution of the swelling.
