Do you suffer from unsightly spider veins or varicose veins on your legs, face, or anywhere else on your body?

Spider veins are small veins that appear red or blue and sprawl across the skin, looking a lot like roadmaps. Their name comes from the resemblance of spider webs. Spider veins have many originations including hormonal change, sun exposure, crossing of legs, sleeping in the wrong position and the backup of blood due to illness or injury.

Varicose veins are much larger than spider veins and appear to buldge to the surface of the skin. They happen as a result of damage to the valves within the veins themselves. When blood is blocked by obstructions, the veins get bigger and then they can be defined as varicosed.

What can I do about my unsightly veins?

Atlanta Medispa and Surgery Center offers two remedies for spider and varicose veins: sclerotherapy and surface laser treatment.

Sclerotherapy involves inserting a liquid chemical into the vein with a needle; it’s virtually painless. The process usually takes only 15-20 minutes and there is essentially no downtime required, so we should have you in and out in no time at all! We ask that you wear compression stockings on the treated vessel for at least 3 days, as the scarring process is taking place. This will keep the blood flow from going back into the damaged vessel and reappearing as a new vein.

Shortly after the procedure, the vein will fade. The same vein may require more than one treatment, so be prepared to schedule another appointment with Atlanta MediSpa and Surgery Center 4-6 weeks from the date of your procedure. You can set up an appointment with us at 678-213-3331 or log on to our website at www.atlantamedispa.com.

Surface laser treatments include two different modalities: broadband light (BBL), which is also called intense pulse light, and Nd:Yag laser therapy. BBL is used to shrink the vessel more gradually than sclerotherapy.  We use this for vessels that are not anatomically positioned for sclerotherapy. Over time this modality will make the vein eventually disappear. Nd:Yag laser therapy should only be used in the hands of a trained laser physician due to the potential harm of the laser to the skin. Dr. Atkins and Dr. Frodel are trained professionals on these devices, so you can rest assured that you will be in good hands.

These treatments don’t take long to perform either, so you can resume your day-to-day activities soon thereafter. These techniques work best for small veins and usually require multiple treatments. The doctor may recommend another form of treatment better suited for your specific skin type. Schedule your appointment today and get rid of those annoying veins!

Are there any side effects of the treatments?

Possible side effects of sclerotherapy, all of which are temporary, include red patches of skin, brown spots around treated area, and trapped hemosiderin from the blood. These typically all go away on their own and are unusual to linger.

Possible side effects of surface laser treatment, all of which are rare and temporary, include redness and swelling of the skin and less often some slight discoloration of the skin where the vessel was located. These all will go away on their own.
